Gaudí, Venerable: Beatification is a Matter of Time, but Depends on a Miracle
“Gaudí’s beatification is a matter of time, not of when.”
The president of the Pro-Beatification Association of Gaudí, José Manuel Almuzara, analyzes the current status of the cause of the architect of God. Having been declared Venerable, only the approval of a miracle remains before the Church can raise him to the altars.
The beatification process of the architect Antoni Gaudí (1852-1926) is advancing steadily within the Holy See, although without a specific date for its culmination. The cause, promoted by the Association led by José Manuel Almuzara, reached a crucial milestone when he was declared Venerable by Pope Saint John Paul II. This title certifies the heroicity of his Christian virtues and his profound Catholic faith. The COPE article analyzes the current status of the process, which is currently in a phase of providential waiting.
The main idea emphasized by Almuzara is that, from a canonical point of view, the cause is completely finalized. The Catalan architect has already been recognized by the Church as a model of Christian life and holiness. Now, the only pending requirement is the approval of a miracle attributed to his intercession. This step is indispensable for the Venerable Gaudí to be elevated to the glory of the altars as a blessed.
“The miracle must be something extraordinary, instantaneous, perfect, and lasting.”
It is recalled that, at one point, a possible miracle related to the inexplicable healing of a woman from Reus suffering from blindness was studied. Following an exhaustive analysis by the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, the required certainty could not be reached. The Church demands that the miracle be an extraordinary, instantaneous, perfect, and lasting event that science cannot explain under any circumstances. Therefore, the Association remains attentive to any sign of Providence.
José Manuel Almuzara insists that beatification is not a sprint, but a process that must follow divine timing. The Association’s work is now focused on promoting private devotion to the Venerable, asking the faithful to pray for his intercession. The aim is for the Lord to manifest a new sign that will allow the process to be unlocked and brought to its happy conclusion with the proclamation of beatification.
“The cause is canonically complete.”
Hope for Gaudí’s prompt beatification remains alive, especially among devotees who see in his work and life a testimony of unwavering faith. While the Church awaits the divine signal, the figure of Gaudí continues to inspire millions of people worldwide. The Pro-Beatification Association reiterates its confidence that the architect of the Sagrada Familia will soon be declared a blessed for the entire Church, a model of Christian life and art.
