La Tribuna interviews Almuzara on the centenary of Gaudí’s death
“Gaudí considered himself an instrument in God's creation, placing his gifts at the service of the Creator and of humankind. A man in love with his work and with God, who drew no division between human consciousness and the divine”
The newspaper La Tribuna devotes a two-page feature to the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death and interviews José Manuel Almuzara, president of the Association for the Beatification of the architect. The driving force behind the cause remembers the Catalan genius as a man of faith who placed his talent at the service of God.
On 17 June 2026, the newspaper La Tribuna, part of the Promecal group, published an extensive two-page feature to mark the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death. The piece, titled «El legado eterno de Gaudí» (Gaudí's eternal legacy) and written by J. Villahizán through the SPC agency, appeared in the paper's provincial editions across Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León. Alongside the feature, the newspaper included an interview with José Manuel Almuzara, president of the Association for the Beatification of Gaudí. The chosen headline echoed his own words: «He was a man in love with his work and with the Almighty».
In the conversation, Almuzara offers the key that has guided his decades of work: to understand Gaudí not only as the great architect, but as a believer who understood his craft as a vocation. For the driving force behind the cause, the Catalan genius never separated his professional life from his faith, but rather made the two into one. It is that inner unity which, in his view, explains the spiritual depth that runs through his entire body of work. He sums it up in the interview when describing how the architect placed his gifts at the service of the Creator and of humankind.
“We decided to found a civil association to make known the exemplary life of a man of faith, one who helps us walk towards light and beauty”
In the feature, Almuzara is presented as the «alma mater» of the cause, having devoted more than three decades to promoting recognition of the architect's holiness. In the interview he explains how the project began and the meaning they wished to give it from the very first moment. The Association was born out of the desire to reveal the exemplary life of a man of faith whose witness continues to speak to all who contemplate his work. With these words, the president distils the mission that has sustained him throughout all these years.
La Tribuna's feature traces the architect's career and dwells on the curved line as the spiritual signature of his language, present in his most emblematic creations. Among them are the Sagrada Família, the Episcopal Palace of Astorga, El Capricho in Comillas, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, Park Güell and Palau Güell. The text also recalls that, that very week, Pope Leo XIV blessed the Sagrada Família, a gesture that placed the Barcelona basilica at the heart of Church affairs. The coincidence heightens the reach of the centenary and the enduring relevance of Gaudí's figure.
“Since 1992 we have received many letters, testimonies of favours and possible miracles. Since 2023 the Canonical Association under the Archdiocese of Barcelona has submitted a possible miracle, now under study, which could lead to Gaudí being declared Blessed”
The cause is advancing with a firm step, as Almuzara relates in the interview. Since 1992, the Association has received numerous letters and testimonies of favours and possible miracles attributed to the architect's intercession. Since 2023, the Canonical Association under the Archdiocese of Barcelona has submitted a possible miracle, now under study, which could open the door to beatification. With this horizon in sight, the centenary of his death also becomes a moment of hope for all who work to see Gaudí recognised as Blessed.
